A headset is two devices sharing one body, and they fail independently. Hearing audio perfectly while nobody can hear you is not a contradiction — it is the single most common headset symptom, and it usually has a mechanical or wiring cause rather than a software one. This guide starts with the physical checks that resolve most cases, then works up through connectors, drivers, and app settings.
Check these three first. Is the boom arm rotated down? Is there an inline mute button or switch on the cable? Is the plug pushed all the way in until it clicks? Between them these account for a large share of "headset mic not working" reports, and all three are invisible in software.
Connector mismatch is the leading cause of headset microphones that were never going to work, and no amount of driver reinstalling changes that.

Count the black rings on the plug. Two rings on a single plug means no microphone can reach the computer, and the fix is an adapter, not a setting.
Two further wrinkles. First, splitter adapters come in two opposite kinds — one splits a combo jack into two plugs, the other combines two plugs into one combo jack. They are not interchangeable and are often mislabelled. Second, headsets built to the older OMTP standard have the microphone and ground pins reversed relative to the CTIA standard used by essentially everything modern; on modern hardware they produce loud distortion or nothing at all.
Plugging in a headset creates one or more new audio devices, and the system's choice of default is frequently wrong.

A working-but-inaudible headset microphone is a level problem, not a fault:
Those four tests place the fault in one of three places every time. Once located, follow the matching guide: Windows, Mac, browser permissions, or specific apps.
Check the boom arm position — rotating it up mutes many headsets at hardware level. Then check inline mute switches, and that the plug is pushed fully in until it clicks.
Count the black rings on the plug. Two rings (TRS) carries stereo output only and can never deliver a microphone signal. Three rings (TRRS) carries output plus microphone and is what laptop combo jacks need.

Insufficient power from a hub, dock, or monitor port. Plug directly into the computer and try a different port.
Raise the input level to 70 to 80 percent, position the boom two to three centimetres from the corner of your mouth, and disable noise-suppression utilities that may be gating quiet speech.
Test the headset on a phone or second computer, and test a different microphone on this computer. Those two tests place the fault every time.
