Expensive wireless headphones that sound superb for music turn tinny and muffled the moment you join a call. This is not a fault, a settings mistake, or a sign of a bad product. It is a structural limitation of how Bluetooth audio works, and understanding it is the difference between chasing a fix that does not exist and choosing a setup that works.
The short version: Bluetooth cannot send high-quality audio in both directions at once. The moment anything opens the microphone, the connection switches from a stereo listening profile to a narrowband calling profile, and both playback and microphone quality collapse together.
Bluetooth audio uses two different profiles for two different jobs:

Only one can be active at a time. The available bandwidth on a classic Bluetooth link is not enough for high-quality stereo out and a microphone back simultaneously, so when an application requests the microphone, the system switches the whole link to the calling profile. The drop is instant and unmistakable — music playing at the time audibly degrades mid-track.
This applies to every classic Bluetooth headset, including AirPods, and price does not change it. A £400 pair and a £20 pair use the same profiles.
That last one is the clearest confirmation. Selecting the Hands-Free device gives you a microphone and poor playback; selecting Stereo gives good playback and no microphone. There is no option that provides both.

In practice it needs support at three points simultaneously — headset, host device, and operating system — and that alignment is still uneven. To hear the difference yourself, record a few seconds on your Bluetooth headset with the recorder, then repeat on the built-in microphone. The comparison usually settles the argument in about twenty seconds.
