This sound test plays audio generated in your browser and sends it to whichever output your computer is currently using. It answers one question quickly: is sound working at all? Because playing sound needs no permission and no plugin, the test starts the moment you press a button — there is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.

Thirty-second version: set your volume to roughly half, press Run the quick sound test, and listen for a lower tone on the left followed by a higher tone on the right. Two tones from the correct sides means your sound output is healthy.

How to test sound on your computer

  1. Set your system volume to about half. Steady test tones are more fatiguing than music at the same level.
  2. Press Run the quick sound test. It plays the left channel, then the right, about a second and a half apart.
  3. If you heard both, sound output is working. If you heard one or neither, use the individual Left only and Right only buttons to narrow it down.
  4. Play two or three of the fixed tones to check that each is clean rather than buzzy or crackly.
  5. Finish with the frequency sweep, which climbs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz over eight seconds and exposes rattles a single tone will not.

The whole sequence takes well under a minute, and every step runs locally. Nothing is recorded and nothing is uploaded.

No sound at all: the fix order

When a computer goes silent, people usually suspect the speakers. In practice the speakers are rarely at fault. Work down this list in order — the first three items account for the large majority of cases.

  1. Check which output device is selected. On Windows, click the volume icon and expand the device list. On macOS, hold Option and click the volume icon in the menu bar to see every output at once. A connected monitor, a dock, or an idle Bluetooth speaker in another room will happily become the default output without announcing it.
  2. Check the browser tab is not muted. Right-click the tab; browsers keep a per-tab mute that survives reloads and is easy to trigger by accident.
  3. Check the per-app volume. The Windows Volume Mixer can mute your browser alone while every other application still plays. macOS has no per-app mixer, but browser extensions sometimes add one.
  4. Check the physical volume. Powered desktop speakers have their own knob and their own mains power. A lit power LED is not evidence that signal is arriving.
  5. Try headphones. If headphones play the test and speakers do not, the computer is fine and the fault is downstream of it.
  6. Restart the audio service. On Windows, restarting "Windows Audio" in the Services panel clears a surprising number of stuck "no output device" states without a reboot. On macOS, quitting the coreaudiod process from Activity Monitor does the same thing.

Using the test to set a sensible volume

A sound test is also a decent way to calibrate. The 1 kHz tone sits near the peak of human hearing sensitivity, which makes it the closest thing to a reference level you have without measurement gear.

How do I test the sound on my computer?

Does the sound test need a download or a permission prompt?

No. Playing sound requires neither. Only microphone-based tools ask for a browser permission, so this test can run the moment the page loads.

The test plays but I hear nothing. What now?

Check the selected output device, the per-app volume, whether the browser tab is muted, and the physical volume on the speakers — in that order. Monitors, docks, and idle Bluetooth speakers steal the default output constantly.

Can I run this sound test on a phone?

Yes, in mobile Chrome and Safari. Many phones downmix to one speaker, so the left and right buttons may sound the same. Plug in headphones for a real channel check.

Why does the low tone sound so much quieter?

Your ears are far less sensitive at the extremes of the range, and small speakers cannot reproduce deep bass at all. A 60 Hz tone genuinely sounds quieter than a 1 kHz tone at the same output level.
