How to measure sound level in your browser

The meter reads your microphone, calculates the RMS energy of the signal many times a second, and converts it to a decibel figure. Press start, allow the permission prompt, and leave it running for ten to fifteen seconds before reading anything — short bursts are noise, the settled average is the measurement.

  1. Place the laptop or phone where you actually care about the noise, not next to the source.
  2. Keep your hands off the device; handling noise dominates the reading.
  3. Stay silent for the first ten seconds to establish the room's noise floor.
  4. Read the running average rather than the peak.

Uncalibrated by definition. Every microphone has a different sensitivity, and browsers do not expose it. This meter applies a fixed offset that is a reasonable approximation for typical laptop microphones, so treat the absolute number as ±10 dB at best. It is excellent for comparisons — this room versus that room, fan on versus fan off — and unsuitable for compliance, legal, or workplace-safety measurements.

Decibels are logarithmic, which is the part that trips everyone up. A 10 dB rise is about twice as loud subjectively but ten times the sound energy. What a browser meter is genuinely good for

What it is not good for: proving a neighbour is too loud, documenting workplace exposure, or anything with legal weight. Those require a calibrated Type 1 or Type 2 sound level meter.

Why your phone's app shows a different number

Several things pull browser readings away from a dedicated meter:

How accurate is a browser decibel meter?

Treat the absolute number as plus or minus 10 dB. Browsers do not expose microphone sensitivity, so the meter applies a fixed offset. Differences between two measurements are reliable; the absolute value is not.

Can I use this for a noise complaint or workplace measurement?

No. Anything with legal or safety weight requires a calibrated Type 1 or Type 2 sound level meter. This tool has no calibration and no frequency weighting.

What is a normal room noise level?

A quiet bedroom typically reads in the 30s, a home office with equipment running in the 40s, normal conversation around 60, and traffic or a vacuum cleaner 70 to 85.

Why does my phone app show a different number?

Different microphone sensitivity, different weighting, and different placement. Dedicated apps also apply A-weighting to match human hearing, while this meter is unweighted and therefore over-reports low-frequency rumble.

At what level does sound become harmful?

Sustained exposure above 85 dB carries risk, and safe exposure time roughly halves for every additional 3 dB. Brief peaks matter far less than long exposure.

Is my audio recorded?

No. The microphone signal is converted to a level number many times a second and discarded. Nothing is stored or uploaded.
